How Did I Get Here?
Nicaragua never called to me, until it did. More like California was telling me to leave.
I had heard rumours—friends who had passed through Nicaragua and came back with tales of offshore winds and empty waves. Cheap land planted with teak and beachfront lots they were practically giving away. The stories were true, but Nicaragua was a hard sell. Costa Rica was stealing the show at the time. I’d been there a couple of times, which was enough to fall in love. I had spent a good portion of my life in Mexico and I didn’t want to leave that mistress.
Nicaragua though?! Wasn’t there a war going on?
When the opportunity to live and work down here came along in 2011, I was a half-hour CNN news update away from jumping off a cliff. I had spent my last two decades chasing ten days off a year to catch some warm-water waves.
Then I sold everything, bought a sailboat, loaded it with what was left of my life, and cast off.
That’s how I got here. Sort of.
