I’m sorry, you guys—not much to report on this morning, at least out front at Sirena Surf Lodge.

The guests headed down to El Transito chasing some waves, but unfortunately it wasn’t much better there. It’s just one of those days when the energy has dropped off enough that finding something really surfable is a struggle.

That said, there’s still some fun to be had on the longboards and funboards. We’ve got another couple of days of small swell before things start picking up again—and then it looks like we’re heading into a solid 10-day run of overhead surf.

Now that’s a little more like it. 🤙

Against my better judgment, we’re breaking the cardinal rule: never leave good waves to go looking for better waves. 😂

The Point is firing and throwing some bombs, but rumor has it the super-secret sandbar is working again… and the FOMO got the better of us.

A couple things working against it: the offshore winds are really strong and we’re sitting on a minus tide. In my experience, that sandbar likes a little more water—usually a couple hours after low. But it’s been broken down for a while and supposedly it’s coming back, so I need to get my finger on the pulse.

We’re gonna go have a look. If it’s firing, we scored. If not, we tuck our tails between our legs and come back to the Point. 😂 Either way, somebody’s getting waves.

Quick update from Punta Miramar — some fun little bowls breaking out front right now. Definitely worth grabbing a board and getting out there, if for no other reason than to escape this heat.

The tide’s pushing up and it’ll probably get a little fat over the next couple hours. By sunset, it should be dropping again and getting back into this fun zone.

This swell keeps building through tomorrow and into the next day, and it’ll probably outgrow the inside reef. Once that happens, we’ll be looking more toward the outer reef for the goods.

There’s a mix of chest-high to overhead bowls rolling through Playa Hermosa on a medium tide this morning.

A pleasant combination of lefts and rights, although the lefts are definitely more consistent and offering up the better shape.

Is it pumping? Not exactly.

But it is very, very consistent.

For about two hours, there was a wave breaking every 15–30 seconds and it basically never stopped.

That meant a whole lot of cookies for these Cookie Monsters. 🍪 Hopefully they’re full, because I know my arms are tired just from repeatedly lifting the camera.

I started out shooting video from the tripod, then realized still photos were probably the better call—which meant taking the camera off the tripod and holding it for what felt like an eternity.

So… there’s going to be a lot of footage to go through.

As we sort through it, we’ll post some of the better shots and share the hot shots from today.

Plenty of waves. Plenty of reps. Plenty of cookies.

Some Tough Love From Your Favorite Gen Xer — Capitán Goyo 🌊

When I was a kid, there weren’t surf clinics. There weren’t surf coaches. There weren’t 47 YouTube videos explaining how to position your back foot.

You went to the beach. You grabbed a surfboard. And you learned how to surf.

Your friends would watch a set roll in—possibly with death looming on the horizon—point at one and say:

“Yeah. That’s a good one. GO.”

And if you survived, maybe eventually you learned how to surf.

Maybe eventually you even got good.

Today, there’s almost too much information. Clinics, lessons, coaches, guides, tutorials, technique breakdowns… everybody has an opinion about what’s going to make you a better surfer.

Here’s some Gen X tough love:

You know what makes you a better surfer?

Going surfing.

Sure, a good tip can help. The right board helps. Being in the right place with the right waves definitely helps. And a good coach can save you from wasting time making the same mistakes over and over.

But there’s no shortcut around time, effort, focus and repetition.

Surfing is hard.

So you need reps.

Lots of them.

Come get some of those reps down here in Nicaragua. The water’s warm, the waves are plentiful, the vibe is cool, and I will absolutely not hesitate to give you a little Gen X tough love along the way.

The bluest skies, offshore winds, azure waters. 🌊☀️

It is an idyllic day here in Nicaragua. Great day to learn how to surf, great day to be in the ocean cooling off, and the waves are holding.

It’s not quite as big as the forecast made it out to be, but there’s still plenty of energy in the water to push us along and plenty of fun waves to be had.

Right now, we’re just trying to make the most of this medium-high tide before it fills in too much. The good news is the offshore winds look like they’re going to stay consistent all day, so there should be a couple of other options for sessions later.

But in the meantime, what’s right in front of us looks pretty damn good.

Punta Miramar Surf Report 🌊

Good morning, this is Goyo with the surf observations for Punta Miramar.

It’s about 6:20 a.m., and there’s a new swell arriving. As expected, the new swell is long-period and sending in some lines with occasional corners, though we’re at kind of an in-between tide right now.

A lower tide would probably be better for the outer reef. With the tide coming in, it might not be working as well on the inner sandbars, so we’re going to head down to the reefs at Playa Hermosa and look around.

There’s definitely some swell standing up on the outer reef. With the current tide, the waves aren’t quite breaking out there—they’re rolling through and then reforming closer to the inside. So we’re going to see where the swell is focusing on the reefs and try to find some corners and open faces.

My guess is Salinas Grande is probably a little too closed out right now with the long-period swell, but it should be good on the back end of the swell as the period comes down.

It also looks like it’s going to be big enough for Outer Miramar to start working, and there’s a good chance Puerto Sandino will be working as well. It’s had some time to recoup after the storm, so we’ll be checking on that and reporting back.

El Tránsito Delivers 🌊

We mimicked yesterday morning’s efforts and headed back to El Tránsito just after first light.

If you listened to my Instagram report, you probably heard me babble for three minutes about how I don’t really love Transito. 😂 But I have to give credit where credit is due—today, Transito was in fine form.

I love to hate on it because it’s basically the kiddie pool. It doesn’t usually offer up the kind of heavy waves that get hardcore surfers excited.

But honestly, that’s exactly what makes it great.

Sometimes you don’t need heavy. Sometimes you just want clean, user-friendly waves where you can relax, catch a bunch of rides, work on your surfing, and have fun.

That was this morning.

I kicked back, watched our guests surf, took photos, and enjoyed a beautiful morning at the beach.

Rest assured, there’s heavier swell on the way—and as things get bigger and more serious, we’ll keep chasing it and bringing you the reports. But in the meantime, enjoy the mellow stuff while it lasts.

Painfully small… especially when you follow that tiny little dribble right onto the shallow reef. It’s not razor sharp reef, but it’s like that side of the cheese grater that’s made for sanding down nutmeg and knuckles. It works on soft salt soaked feet as well! There were actually a couple of waves that broke a little farther out, but trust me, it wasn’t worth the wait…or was it? I think if you’re from an East facing coast, it might have been worth waiting for a few. If you’re a West Coaster, Pacific Islander, or a wave pool junkie… probably a great day to sleep in, drink too much and binge on food, netflix or naps. Give it a couple more days and I’ll hopefully have something more exciting to report. Looking forward to seeing how the Sandino sand bar is after some calm seas… there’s been a little bit of rain too, maybe not enough to drive a lot of sediment, but at this point every little bit helps. Who is this fucking El Niño kid anyway…I wanna kick his ass;-)
