LOCATION AND SURF

Punta Miramar, Nagarote Province of Nicaragua- practically a village lost in time, where local culture meets the powerful waves of the Pacific coast. We have a sandy beach dotting the rocky coast and various surf breaks.  Explore world class waves breaking on pristine beaches, savor delicious local cuisine from our kitchen, and immerse yourself in genuine Nicaraguan hospitality.

SURF SPOTS:

  • Miramar Point Outer Reef:

In front of our lodge is a rocky point with a full slabbing barrel that handles the biggest waves thrown at it.  This is not a beginner wave as it has a very steep take off typically directly into a barrel.  It is very makeable at it's best (steep south direction) but even with more Westerly direction it will throw at least a corner along some part of the wave.  If you're not interested in surfing it, it's still the best show in town, grab a Toña and watch from the comort of our shaded terraces!

Access: directly in front of the lodge, paddle straight out

Wave Length: up to 300 yards!

Best Size: minimum 3.5 feet at 16 seconds...and up...

Best Tide: variable, typically low tide as the swell gets into minimum   size range, then on larger swells more tide will help... sometimes breaking all the way through a high tide with freight train barrels!

Boards: Short board, Step Up, Fish, Body Board (anything you don't mind breaking!)

Ability Level: Intermediate to Advanced (a very challenging wave)

  • Miramar Point 1st reef:

The inside reef at Miramar is a series of boulders and slabs that mix the waves up into a skatepark of sorts with different bowl and sections.  It can reel under the right conditions, but it's typically breaking in multiple spots.

Access: directly in front of the lodge, paddle straight out

Wave Length: short but up to 100

Best Size: 3-5 feet at 10-13 seconds from South to Southwest

Best Tide: 6-8 feet (medium high to high)

Boards: Short board, Fish, Body Board

Ability Level: Beginner to Advanced depending on conditions

  • Puerto Sandino/Queen of the Coast!:

Just 2 miles to the north, we take guests on daily boat trips to surf this sand bottomed river mouth point that often resembles Mundaka...except warmer and less crowded!  It can be heavy, but is typically very user friendly for all abilities to find the waves of their life.

             Wave Length: 100-300 yards!

Best Size: 3-5 feet at 13-16 seconds from South to Southwest

             Best Tide: incoming/variable

Boards: Short board, Fish, Body Board, Longboard, SUP, Foil

Ability Level: Beginner to Advanced, just know your limits

  • Shacks/Shifty's:

These are small reef/beach breaks about 1/4 mile to the south.  They break best on the backside of large swells when the period is down to about 13 seconds or less.  Often they have the best shape in the area, but can be finicky as far as perfect conditions go.

             Access: a short walk south

             Wave Length: 20-50 yards

Best Size: 3-5 feet at 12-14 seconds from South to Southwest

Boards: Short board, Fish, Body Board

Ability Level: Shifties- Beginner and up, Shacks- Intermediate

  • Salinas Grande:

About 5 miles to the north is a long expanse of empty beach that stretches for about 20 miles up to Isla Juan Venado and then Las Peñitas.  This is at the northernmost part of the famous Nicaragua lake effect offshore winds.  Salinas Grande always has waves and when conditions are right offers some of the most uncrowded beach break barrels in Nicaragua.

Access: 10 minute boat ride or 40 minute drive

Wave Length: 20-100 yards

Best Size: 2-5 feet at 12-14 seconds from South to Southwest

Boards: Short board, Fish, Body Board

Ability Level: beginner and up depending on conditions

  • El Transito:

About 10 miles south of the lodge is a small beach with a line of rocks about 100 yards offshore...the rocks help to form sand bars that shape the waves along this stretch of beach.  Typically a beginner spot, Transito on occasion breaks with some juice and can provide some more challenging waves, but we typcially look to it as an outlet for smaller days or even when we want to break out a longboard.

Access: 15-30 minute drive (depending on road conditions)

Wave Length: 20-100 yards

Best Size: 2-5 feet at 12-14 seconds from South to Southwest

Boards: Short board, Fish, Body Board, longboard, SUP

Ability Level: beginner and up depending on conditions

  • The Boom:

About 65 north is a beach called Playa Asserradores and a section of that beach is known as The Boom.  One of the better marketed waves in Nicaragua it's become crowded with barrel hounds, but it can be very very fun.  We go when we know the conditions are going to be right or when we have surfers with the ability and spare boards to break.  It works off refraction from outer reefs that double up the waves into A-frames.

Access: 1.5 hour drive

Wave Length: 20-50 yards

Best Size: 2-5 feet at 12-14 seconds from South to Southwest

Boards: Short board, Fish, Body Board

Ability Level: if you don't know, don't go

  • Secret Spots:

While there are very few secret spots left in Nicaragua and around the world, we do have some spots that we can access when the time is right.  You'll just have to trust us to get you there when conditions call for it.

Non-Surf Atractions:

  • Juan Venado Island: Natural reserve with mangroves and wildlife.
  • Cosigüina Volcano: Hiking with panoramic views.
  • Catarina: Viewpoint overlooking Laguna Apoyo, Volcan Mombacho and Lake Nicaragua.
  • Apoyo Lagoon: Beautiful saphire blue volcanic lake to swim and relax in
  • Laguna Asososca: A volcanic lake a short hike into the bush where you can experience untouched nature.
  • Leon Viejo:  a picturesque village that was all but abandoned a century ago when threatened by an impending volcanic eruption from Momotombo.  Good food and great photos...
  • Leon:  Nearest Colonial city with old world ambiance and precious nooks and crannies to explore as well as weekend nightlife for making bad decisions!
